Start Up.

More resilient and sustainable communities are critical to breaking the cycle of poverty.
Ghana

During Covid-19, at least 22 million Ghanaians experienced a decrease in household income and over a quarter of adults were forced to stop work.

Many of the families we support live in extreme poverty, unable to provide food and shelter for their children due to financial difficulties.

Through our Start Up programme we are working to create prosperity, provide employment opportunities and help the parents of the children we support to create their own income. The families we support are skilled and talented individuals, and need support to start up their own careers. Our Start Up programme provides financial support for individuals to invest in the equipment they need to start their own business.

We Provide:

  • A financial start-up grant to create a sustainable income
  • A ‘Developing Business Plans’ workshops
  • A year of individual support, monitoring and mentoring from our Business Mentor

Miriam and Mr Obeng’s story

Miriam, a student on our Girl Power Project, is a skilled seamstress studying fashion design. Her father, Mr Obeng, is a very skilled tailor and Miriam’s inspiration.

Both Miriam and her father have a physical disability known as Rickets. This makes it more challenging for them to find work in the region. We provided Miriam and her father with a small business grant to start up their own tailoring and sewing business.

Their business is now thriving, with over 26 customers a week in Ghana. They even provide items for Porridge and Pens to sell and to help with our fundraising! We are so proud of their success.
