Why we no longer sponsor individual children
When Porridge and Pens first began, donors were linked directly to individual students. But as our school grew, we realised this could leave some children feeling excluded and placed too much focus on one child rather than the whole class.
We’ve taken time to listen, learn, and follow best practice. Today, we are committed to being as fair and ethical as possible. That’s why we’ve moved to a class-based model that protects every child’s dignity and ensures all students benefit equally.
Your £10 a month provides:

£5 – Nutritious meals: hot lunches and healthy snacks to fuel growing minds.

£4 – Dedicated teachers: fair pay and training for the people who guide and inspire our students every day.

£1 – A safe school: electricity, hygiene supplies, and emergency support to keep the doors open and the children learning in a secure environment.
How you’ll be part of their story
As an Education Champion, you’ll be connected with a class at Brightlingsea Academy.

For confidentiality, we do not share children’s names.

Instead, you’ll get to know the class teacher, whose name and photo we’ll introduce to you.

Each month, your teacher will send a short update with:
- Class news and photos
- Stories of what the children have been learning
- A glimpse of the meals your support has made possible
